West Lafayette man arrested for attempted murder after standoff

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — What started with a woman getting shot in Monticello, ended with the arrest of a man in West Lafayette Thursday night.

Dispatch received the report a woman had been shot in the 1100 block of Grace Court in Monticello around 5:45 p.m.

Officers arrived in the area and found the victim, who had multiple gunshot wounds. She was able to give police the name and a description of the suspect.

The victim told police 51-year-old Randy McGill shot her and was likely headed back to his West Lafayette home.

Multiple law enforcement agencies set up a perimeter around his house in the 4200 block of Trilithon Court. Police say McGill cut off communication with police at about 7:30 p.m.

Murray Marshall lives in the neighborhood where the standoff took place.

“We’ve never had any issues like this, so it does shock me, totally,” Murray said.

After a search warrant was issued, the Tippecanoe County Special Response Team entered the home at 11:39 p.m.

“We were making sure no one was going to get hurt in the whole operation,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Kim Riley said. “So they did gas the house first, waited a few minutes for the air to clean, then they went in.”

McGill was found on the first floor in a semiconscious state. He was taken to Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital for treatment.

Police say McGill will be taken to the White County Jail and arrested for attempted murder when he is released from the hospital.

The woman McGill allegedly shot was taken to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. Police said her injuries were not life-threatening.
