Annual fundraiser in Monticello to help veterans make Honor Flight

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The first Honor Flight is still several weeks away, but the Lafayette Gold Star Mothers are already hard at work getting those flights secured for our local veterans.

The group has been raising money all year long, and you can help Saturday, March 25, with a fundraiser at the Oakdale Dam Inn in Monticello.

Pam Mow with the Gold Star Mothers and Lesley Ainley from the Oakdale Dam joined News 18 This Morning to talk about the event.

After a recent increase of price in airline tickets, the Gold Star Mothers need your help more than ever to ensure veterans can make the flight.

“We’ve gone from having to raise $65,000 to … $80,000 for flights,” Mow said. “So [the fundraiser with Oakdale Dam Inn] is a really great jump-start to our year.”

Plenty of great food will be available at the fundraiser.

“Our staff and our customers have been looking forward to this date for months,” Ainley said. “This will be our fifth year. We typically raise about $4,000 from the customers, and then we will match whatever the customers donate. That $8,000 will enable 16 veterans to make the flight.”

Mow said putting veterans on the flight is a great way to honor our veterans, many of whom haven’t been properly recognized for their sacrifices.

To enjoy a nice dinner and donate to the Honor Flight, stop by Oakdale Dam Inn, 11899 W. Oakdale Drive, in Monticello on Saturday, March 25. Dinner will be available from 4-9 p.m.
