Pedestrian struck and killed in Newton County

NEWTON CO., Ind. (WLFI) — A man is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Newton County Saturday.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, around 10 p.m. deputies were called to an area along State Road 10 between DeMotte and Roselawn for a report of a person struck by a vehicle.

A man was found unresponsive on the side of the road with bystanders performing CPR. Investigators believe a Honda SUV was traveling west on SR 10 when it struck the male from behind as he was walking in the westbound lane.

The driver told investigators she did not see the man walking in the roadway.

The Newton County coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was not injured and refused medical treatment.

State Road 10 was shut down in all directions while deputies investigated.

The names of the people involved are not being released at this time.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and an investigation is underway.
