MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — Lynn Oliver and a group of her friends have made Franciscan Health’s five times 5K challenge an annual tradition.
“Yes, we’ve done all five for a few years now” Oliver said.
Those who sign up can run or walk in five specific Franciscan sponsored races.
Oliver said, “It’s great, it’s fun, it gives you activity, it tries to keep you in shape.”
The event also helps raise money for local organizations. Saturday morning’s 5K at the Boys and Girls Club of Montgomery County is the first of five.
The club’s Chief Professional Officer Craig Reeves said the 5K helped them raise more than $15,000 this year.
“The community comes out and supports us and it’s awesome,” Reeves said.
This helps the club organizers serve more than 5,000 kids in the community who come to the club.
“And obviously without the support from Franciscan, our sponsors, the community itself – we wouldn’t be able to do the things that we do,” Reeves said.
A prize is given to walkers and runners following the completion of the fifth race. Last year, 24 participants completed all five races and were given a running jacket.
Sister Petra Nielsen says having this event and partnering with the community encourages people to get out and move.
“It’s really exciting to see, ya know, so many people come together to support the well-being of the community.”
The Franciscan-sponsored 5X5K races include the following:
- Saturday, March 18 – Boys and Girls Club’s Run for the Club
- Saturday, June 10 – Strawberry Run
- Saturday, July 15 – 4H Color Run
- Saturday, Sept. 16 – Franciscan Community Day 5K
- Thursday, Nov. 23 – Sugar Creek Trail Thanksgiving Day Pie Run
New this year participants have the option to “replace a race.” A participant may walk or run in four of the races listed above and submit a replacement race scheduled between March 18 and Nov. 23. The replacement must be a 5K or longer.
