WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (The Exponent) – Purdue has begun construction on steam tunnels around campus this summer, closing several roads and sidewalks.
According to Steve Johnson, the superintendent for the tunnel work on Third Street and engineer for Mid-states General and Mechanical Contracting Corp., the steam tunnels connect every building on campus and are “basically the lifeline that connects building-to-building.” Steam tunnels include power lines, communication wiring and water lines in addition to steam.
Third Street, east of University St., will be closed until Aug. 1 and the sidewalks will have limited access. Mid-states General and Mechanical Contracting Corp. is the general contractor for the Third Street project.
