Sigma Pi fights hazing culture

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (The Exponent) – For years, hazing has been viewed as “earning your way in” to Greek life and usually involves a degrading or humiliating ritual with potentially lethal consequences.

Sigma Pi invited executive director of the fraternity, Mike Ayalon, to speak to the Greek community on identifying 40 signs of hazing and how it can be prevented. Ayalon, a State University of New York — Buffalo graduate, said the skills he learned in Sigma Pi contributed to his success. He wants all Greek chapters to focus on building life skills and tradition, rather than initiation practices.

Infamous examples of hazing include verbal and sexual harassment, consuming large amounts of alcohol, ranking physical appearance, eating strange food concoctions and removing clothing.
